Papers and artifacts of the Hatfield family of southwest West Virginia, as compiled by their descendants. Best known for the Hatfield and McCoy feud during the late 19th century, this collection is connected to Devil "Anse" Hatfield, his wife Louvisa Hatfield, and four of their 13 children: Elias, Tennyson ("Tennis"), Joseph Davis ("J.D."), and Detroit ("Troy"). The most common types of materials found in the collection are newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and later academic writings on the Hatfield and McCoy feud. To complement the archival material, biographical and online print outs have been included in the collection by the donor. When possible, we have kept the original order of photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence. Most of the content is regarding the everyday life of the Hatfields and their extended family, including the children's experiences working for the Pocahontas Coal Company, holiday and greeting cards, delinquent account notices, and land deeds. Much of the material pertains to humorous anecdotes and family stories passed down through the various generations of Hatfields.

Miscellaneous items, mainly dealing with the southern counties of West Virginia, particularly the Miller family of Logan County. These include one letter from B.F. Miller of Enterprise, Oregon to his brother, John S. Miller of Logan, two letters from Tollison Shumat of Raleigh County to his daughter, Clara Shumat Miller, and a letter from John L. Miller of Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. John S. Miller of Logan, describing President Harding's funeral. Also includes a letter from West Virginia Governor G.W. Atkinson to Mingo County Prosecutor John L. Stafford (9 August 1899), concerning the extradition and prosecution of the Hatfields, and a sentence of death pronounced on Laban T. Walken in Wayne County (1879).

Transcript of a 1972 interview of Andrew Chafin (1886-1977), great nephew of Devil Anse Hatfield of the Hatfield & McCoy feud, regarding the feud. At age eight years, Chafin was acted as a liaison between his family, the Hatfields, and "civilization". This oral history gives a personal account of the feud from a child's perspective. Names related to the feud and discussed within the interview include: Cap Hatfield, "Devil" Anse Hatfield, and Elias (Ellias) Hatfield, among others. The interview includes the participation of Rayond and Eva Lou Chafin; Andrew and Sarah Chafin; Claude and Tay Chafin; A.L. and Ann Chafin; and Allan, Brad, and Scott Chafin.
